It also features a great canteen where travelers can get themselves several drinks and eats. The cottages and a rest camp at Kapkwai are a great gem that is extensively attractive across the slopes near the source of Sipi River. It has got three immaculate service log cabins with twin beds, hot water, solar lighting and private balconies that are provided.
The neaby Kapkwai caves are addressed as the largest of Mount Elgon’s caves, with its diversity and grandeur unequalled, as a result, the caves will make your experience unforgettable.
There is cool, damp air that welcomes you as you enter the narrow, low ceilinged passageway and there is a vital drop in temperatures as you go far into the cave. There is also a man-made tunnel towards one of Mount Elgon’s largest caves, a gaping hole in the mountain, littered with tiny sparkling crystals that are so great.
The Kapkwai caves are just a 3km mountain bamboo trail following the ridge view trail. Along the trail there are many primates, bird species and rare trees such as the Elgon teak and the Elgon Olive. These caves were also a sacred site used by the Sabiny and Bagisu (Bamasaba) elders for prayers and to offer sacrifices during ceremonies.
Apart from the caves, Mount Elgon National Park is home to over 300 species of birds, including the endangered Lammergeyer. There are small antelopes, forest monkeys, elephants and buffaloes that live on the mountain side , in addition to the higher slopes that are protected by national parks in both Uganda and Kenya. These create an extensive trans-boundary conservation area which has been declared a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve.
