Hiking to Masaba Summit
Hiking to Masaba Summit is one of the most exciting tourist activities on Mount Elgon. Masaba is one of the 5 main peaks/summits of Mount Elgon and is found entirely in Uganda, unlike other peaks (like Sudek and Mubiyi that are either on the Uganda-Kenya border or only on the Kenya side). This peak stands at about 4,161 meters (13,652 feet) above sea level and summiting it means enjoying breathtaking views of the lowlands and other higher peaks of Mount Elgon.
Often mistaken for the highest peak when viewed from the lowlands, Masaba Peak is actually the lowest/smallest of the 5 main peaks on Mount Elgon, and the Bagisu people who are also referred to as the “Bamasaba” were named after this mountain peak. This summit was named after the founding father of the Bagisu people (Masaba) and the entire Mount Elgon (not just the peak) is referred to by this name.
Mount Elgon is a solitary volcano found in Eastern Uganda, sitting along the Uganda-Kenya border with a base of 4,000 square kilometers hence making it the largest volcanic base in the whole World. This UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve (since June 2023) is estimated to have existed for over 24 million years hence making it the oldest extinct volcano in the East African region.
Hiking to Masaba summit
On the day of hiking to Masaba summit, climbers are expected to be up early, grab breakfast, and hit the trail by 7:00 a.m. after briefing. The best part of this hike is the scrambling up the steep inclines as well s the breathtaking views of the surrounding lowlands from the peak.
Masaba summit can be hiked via the 3-day Sasa Trail from Kapkwai while sighting different plant species that include the giant podocarpus, pillarwood Cassipourea malosana, Elgon Olive trees among others. Although wildlife is rare while hiking to Masaba summit, some climbers have been lucky to see blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, and lots of bird species along the way.
When to hike to Masaba summit
The hike to Masaba summit is possible throughout the year but the dry months of January, February, June, July, August, September, and December are without doubt the best to undertake these adventures. The rainfall levels are reduced during these months hence the forest trails are less muddy and slippery.
The wet months of March, April, May, October and November are usually avoided by most mountain climbers because rainfall levels are increased hence making the forest trails muddier and more slippery. However, if you expect better photography, then you will choose the wet months because vegetation is greener and the sky has been cleared of any dust. These months also provide incredible birding opportunities since they are the breeding season.
What to carry for the hike to the summit
For your hike to Masaba summit, pack/carry a mountain jacket, a warm sweater for the cold mornings and evenings, insect repellant, a waterproof backpack, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt/s, comfortable and breathable safari pants, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, a basic first aid kit, gardening gloves, a good camera, camping equipment (can be hired at the briefing point and should include sleeping gear, and others).
